Mining and mineral development is a dynamic and evolving industry within Treaty #3 territory. The development of one operating mine and with many exploration companies exploring claims within the area, PWI has two positions that deal directly with mining and mineral development.
The Mineral Development Advisor is a position funded by the Province of Ontario through the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry. The Mineral Development Advisor supports the capacity of our member Communities to participate in consultation processes conducted pursuant to the Mining Act. The MDA also supports education and awareness building within the First Nations, including the range of economic benefits and opportunities arising from mineral development.
Community Coordinator – New Gold is a position funded by New Gold Inc. as outlined in the Participation Agreement signed in March of 2012. The Community Coordinator acts as a liaison between New Gold and the Participating First Nations and provides support and advice to the Company on matters relating to First Nations. The Community Coordinator regularly reports to the Rainy Lake Chiefs.
